Low Income families to be protected from pesticides through home ownership

LiHOUS Co-operation, Inc.
2913 Akers Road, Bakersfield • California 93309

661-397-8883
FAX: 661-397-8884

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE.

The LiHOUS Co-operation, a non-profit company promoting ownership of homes by low-income renters, in collaboration with ECO-CARE International, a company promoting awareness to environmental pollutants, and the preservation of chemically-unpolluted homes, have initiated a small-scale projects to assist low-income families own homes, thus protect themselves from “exterminators”.

Anybody who is able to pay rent promptly over a long period of time must be able to own a home. The LiHOUS Co-operation and ECO-CARE International have targeted inexpensive homes ranging from $15,000 to $45,000 and paying cash for them so that they have the flexibility of relating to the would be tenant-buyers in terms favorable to both parties. So far, the companies have relied mainly on homes sold by FannieMae, a Federal Government Corporation.

This idea originated from the fact that poor families are the most exposed to toxic environment, mostly in their rented homes. There are frequent complains that the toilets leak and the homes are infested with roaches. The homes get sprayed regularly, but in vain because the roaches have developed resistance to the poisons. So the children and their mothers become the victims of the chemical onslaughts.

Dr. Ogwaro (Okech “Ken” Ogwaro, Ph.D.) who has operated ECO-CARE International consultancy and operations for over twelve years, to try to reduce the unnecessary use of toxic chemicals in the environment, decided that it would be a good idea to give the power back to the poor, so they can protect themselves. If they own where they live, they will take care of it themselves. The leaky toilets will stop, so will the roaches.

“We are targeting big cities such as Los Angeles, Sacramento, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Washington DC.”, said Dr. Ogwaro. “These are the cities where most urban chemical abuses occur, and the victims are always the poor and less educated”.

In these collaborative projects, LiHOUS Co-operation, Inc. will acquire the homes, in whatever conditions they are in, provided they are rehabilitatable;  and relying on the ECO-CARE Habitat Management Operations experience, the two companies together, hope to stop the Bats, the Roaches and the Rats; train the homeowners on environmental awareness and chemical poisoning prevention; and hand over the keys.
